Sharing files

Upload files and share them by link, one per file or a whole folder with a zip.

A storage project holds files instead of a website. Drop files on the dashboard's Files page or ask your agent to share them. Storage projects stay out of the Projects list: Files shows folders and loose files side by side like a file browser, sortable by name, size, kind and date, and an All files tab lists every file with search. You can rename files and folders (only the shown name changes, so links keep working) and move a file into another folder (its link changes). Nothing gets built or published: each file is live as soon as it's uploaded.

Every upload goes into its own folder, and you get two kinds of links:

  • One link per file, e.g. https://your-files.webly.site/q3-pack/report.pdf
  • One folder link, e.g. https://your-files.webly.site/q3-pack/, a page listing every file with Download all (.zip)

A folder you upload keeps its subfolders and hidden files (like .gitignore): https://your-files.webly.site/q3-pack/src/ lists what's in src, and Download all keeps the structure. Drop a folder from your computer on the Files page, or use Upload a folder.

Anyone with a link can open it, but nobody can browse your other folders. Images, video, audio, PDFs and plain text open in the browser. Everything else downloads.

How long files stay

Pick an expiry when you upload. Expired files are deleted and stop counting toward your storage.

Free1 GB100 MB1, 3 or 7 days
Base25 GB2 GBUp to a year, or forever
Max100 GB2 GBUp to a year, or forever

Storage is shared across everything in the workspace, including the photos and files your websites use. A storage project doesn't use one of your plan's website slots.

To free space used by a website's photos and files, open the site's Photos & files tab and Delete the ones you no longer need. They're deleted for good, so any page that still shows one will show a broken image.

Uploads in progress

The bar at the top of the Files page shows your storage: blue is files that finished uploading, yellow is uploads still in progress, and the rest is free.

  • Uploads in progress don't count as used. They have their own allowance on top of your storage: 1 GB on Free (and without an account), 5 GB on Base, 10 GB on Max.
  • Interrupted uploads continue where they stopped. If your Wi-Fi drops or your computer restarts, drop the same file again within the hour. Only the missing part is sent.
  • Unfinished uploads are cleared after an hour with no activity. An upload that's still sending is never cut off.
  • Clear unfinished uploads cancels them all at once to free the allowance. Finished files aren't touched.

Organizing files

On the Files page, or by asking your agent:

  • Rename a file or folder. Only the name you see changes, so links you already shared keep working.
  • New folder: name it, then drop files into it. You can also drop files onto any folder in the list. Open a folder to browse its subfolders.
  • Move a file into another folder, a new folder, or the top level, with the Move button or by dragging it onto a folder (or onto Files to move it to the top level). The file's link changes, and the old link stops working. Folder links never change.
  • Delete a file or a whole folder. Its links stop working right away.

Big folders

A folder with more than 500 files goes up as one zip, automatically, from the Files page or when your agent shares it. It still works like any other folder: its link lists the files and subfolders, every file has its own link, and Download all gives you the zip itself, with no limit on the number of files. Webly reads files straight out of the zip, so nothing is unpacked or stored twice.

An archive folder is read-only: you can rename or delete the folder, but not add, move, rename or delete single files in it. To change it, delete it and upload the folder again.

Without an account

Your agent can share files before you sign up, alongside the one site it can publish without an account. Make as many links as you like, as long as everything fits in 500 MiB (the site counts too). The links work for 24 hours. To keep the files, claim them within those 24 hours; claiming keeps the site and the files together.
